This is a response to the criticism by popular websites such as Hipster Runoff, which I love reading on a regular basis but have to disagree with their rampant bashing of MGMT as of late.
Archetypal opinions fester across the internet in earnest, as long ago bloggers learned that taking an indifferent position on topics that content is already overly-saturated for will lead to few readers. To ascend from the great wash of posts about the same subject a blogger wishes to cover, some part of their take has to exceptionally stand out. Along with this standing out, also comes a need for speed of delivery, as being behind on a story or meme or musical review will lead to, once again a void of readers. And so, with these characteristics backing much of internet culture, archetypal generalized opinions and speed of delivery which forces even less thought go into these generalizations, sometimes truly jarring content is not given enough time by the critic to be truly appreciated.
Such is the case with MGMT’s Congratulations, an album that has been widely panned by the internet and has been considered a complete flop by many leading critics. The main critiques seem to fall under these categories; the album does not sound in any way similar to the old MGMT, the album simply is not good, that the album is too weird to “get into,” and as always has been the case with MGMT, that they are simply too mainstream to be cool. Allow me to at least attempt to prove these arguments to be false while remaining all kinds of “fair and balanced.”
Informative! Too bad Rostam wasn’t there, because he is the best. Not necessarily any more the best than the other members of Vampire Weekend, but still.
Perhaps you have already read this (if so, you the best as well!), but here is our view of Contra.
As we have said before, we are very aware this is starting to look a lot like VampireOctopus.com. We’ll lay we promise! Anyways, Contra is out next week, but here’s a full stream for you while your waiting and here’s our review of the album. Although I must admit, the album has grown on me considerably since that was written.
So I’ve been listening to the highly anticipated, both by myself and the army of blogs and what not, sophomore effort by Vampire Weekend, Contra, and I am getting pretty upset! This album, for the most part, sounds like a soulless default ringtone! And default ringtones are lame! Every single song, except for “Cousins” which is actually great, seems to have a fairly good base, but is completely ruined on the production side. Songs such as “Diplomat’s Son” sound like they were made in FruityLoops or Garageband by the kid you thought was so musically inspired in middle school but then later realized anyone can make random bass and drum noises sound “meh.” Continue reading…
Yep. I bought it. Just four dollars, ninety-nine cents, and the dignity points I’d been saving for a rainy day. But the thing is, of course I had to buy it. A Grizzly Bear/Victoria Legrand collaboration and Thom Yorke songs I wouldn’t be able to get elsewhere? Sure this album may destroy Grizzly Bear and Bon Iver much like the Garden State soundtrack almost destroyed The Shins, but I mean, still. Still. You know, and what not.
Anyways, here are some people who knew better than me and know what’s up in general about this soundtrack.
Greedy a** holes indeed.
