This day is otherwise known as the Day of Disappointment, because, despite a strong selection of potential nominees to choose from, Emmy voters tend to stick with Two and Half Men and Entourage.  Here’s hoping they shake things up a bit this year, and find room for some of the 10 actors and actresses that I’ve listed here:

Who?: Dianna Agron, Glee – Best Supporting Actress (Comedy)
Where You’ve Seen Her Before: She’s had guest starring roles on Veronica Mars, Heroes, and CSI: NY
Where You’ll See Her Next: In addition to at least 2 more seasons of Glee, Agron will tackle the big screen with roles in The Romantics, Bold Native, and the Steven Spielberg-produced I Am Number Four.

Agron’s surprisingly deep and resonant performance as former Queen Bee Quinn Fabray on the hit show Glee will likely be overlooked due to both her being a Hollywood newbie and overshadowed by surefire winner Jane Lynch.  What started out as a rather one-note bitchy villain role quickly evolved into a heart-wrenching portrayal of teen pregnancy, and Agron played the show’s biggest character arc to perfection.

Who?: Alison Brie, Community – Best Supporting Actress (Comedy)
Where You’ve Seen Her Before: When not on the set of Community, Brie finds time to turn in another great performance on Mad Men as Trudy Campbell, wife of everyone’s favorite corporate climber Peter.
Where You’ll See Her Next: Besides the next seasons of Mad Men and Community, she’s got a couple of indie films coming out soon, including Montana Amazon with Haley Joel Osment, as well as something called Scream 4.

Brie’s performance as uptight Annie might just be the show’s secret weapon. She made what could have been an annoying character into someone that is both hilarious and sympathetic (even when bringing down a man’s career just to keep her study group together). Not only that, but she is quickly establishing herself as the true heart of the show.

Who?: Lizzy Caplan, Party Down – Best Actress (Comedy)
Where You’ve Seen Her Before: She’s been turning in a number of solid performances in both film and television for the past few years, most notably Mean Girls, Cloverfield, and the recent Hot Tub Time Machine.
Where You’ll See Her Next: Though Party Down was cancelled yesterday, Caplan can still be seen in some major films like Catch. 44 with Bruce Willis and Forest Whitaker as well as Danny Boyle’s next work 127 Hours.

Her chemistry with costar/love interest Adam Scott is absolutely perfect, as is her comedic timing and basically everything else about her performance as struggling comedian/caterer Casey.  She imbues her character with an innate coolness that makes her both fun to watch and definite best friend material.

Who?: Chris Colfer, Glee – Best Supporting Actor (Comedy)
Where You’ve Seen Him Before: Unless you’re close family, probably nowhere. Glee was his television debut.
Where You’ll See Him Next: He could most recently be heard in Marmaduke (but don’t hold that against him). Otherwise just more and more seasons of Glee.

Colfer’s storylines on Glee have been the most consistent quality-wise, and the most groundbreaking in their portrayal of a gay teen coming out to both the world and his single parent dad. Colfer is adept at both comedy and drama, and it’s not hard to see why his performance as Kurt is a true fan favorite (and definite Emmy material).

Who?: Vincent Kartheiser, Mad Men – Best Supporting Actor (Drama)
Where You’ve Seen Him Before: He appeared in over 20 episodes of the hit show Angel, and has been in films like Alpha Dog and The Indian in the Cupboard.
Where You’ll See Him Next: The fourth season of Mad Men starts up this summer, and he recently starred in a BBC miniseries called Money which may make it’s way stateside sometime this year.

Though you may not like his character, there’s no denying Kartheiser’s brilliance as perpetual ass-kisser Pete Campbell. He manages to make him both a loving husband and a wandering, would-be womanizer, and perfectly captures the pain and frustration he feels when his attempts to climb the Sterling Cooper ladder fall just short.

Who?: Yun-jin Kim, Lost – Best Supporting Actress (Drama)
Where You’ve Seen Her Before: Other than 6 seasons of Lost? She’s been a pretty big star in her native South Korea for awhile now, often referred to as the “Korean Julia Roberts”.
Where You’ll See Her Next: Kim has nothing lined up as of yet, though I’d assume she’s taking a well-deserved break after spending six years fighting the dark and mysterious forces of The Island.

The fact that Kim has yet to be nominated for an Emmy is somewhat baffling. Her performance as Sun provided the show with it’s emotional heart and soul. Whether searching for her lost husband through both time and space with steely determination, or tearfully bidding him farewell, Kim was often one of the best things about Lost.

Who?: Joel McHale, Community – Best Actor (Comedy)
Where You’ve Seen Him Before: Besides hosting E!’s satirical news show The Soup for six years, McHale has shown up in Spider-Man 2, Will & Grace, The Informant!, and even an episode of Bill Nye, the Science Guy.
Where You’ll See Him Next: Look for him next year in two big budget comedies: The Big Year, with Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson, and What’s Your Number? with Anna Faris, Chris Evans, and Andy Samberg.

He really hit his stride as cocky Jeff Winger about mid-season, and has only gotten better as the show’s gone on. He is able to make a potentially unlikeable character both sympathetic and fun to watch, and his gift for both physical comedy (see episode “Modern Warfare”) and pithy sarcasm brings a lot to the show. Even when playing straight man, as he is often called to do, McHale can get the laughs.

Who?: Aubrey Plaza, Parks and Recreation – Best Supporting Actress (Comedy)
Where You’ve Seen Her Before: She’s popped up on 30 Rock, had a cameo in Judd Apatow’s Funny People, and appeared in the Derrick Comedy film Mystery Team with Community‘s Don Glover.
Where You’ll See Her Next: Parks and Recreation has been benched until mid-season (for some inexplicable reason), but in the meantime you can catch Plaza in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Her deadpan performance as always-disinterested government employee April Ludgate gets some of the show’s biggest laughs. Plaza’s line delivery is brilliant, and her chemistry with Chris Pratt makes the two of them a far more enjoyable couple to watch than Mark and Anne.

Who?: Rico Rodriguez, Modern Family – Best Supporting Actor (Comedy)
Where You’ve Seen Him Before: Guest performances on a number of big TV shows, including ER, Nip/Tuck, NCIS, and My Name is Earl.
Where You’ll See Him Next: The only thing Rodriguez has lined up at the moment is the next season of Modern Family.

Though not even 12 years old yet, Rodriguez gets some of the biggest laughs on the show as wiser-than-his-years Manny Delgado. His comedic timing and line delivery are always spot-on, though the fact that he has to go up against 3 of his own co-stars in this category pretty much means he’ll be (undeservedly) left out.

Who?: Adam Scott, Party Down – Best Actor (Comedy)
Where You’ve Seen Him Before: Where haven’t you seen him? He’s been in The Aviator, Knocked Up, Step Brothers, and Boy Meets World.
Where You’ll See Him Next: His upcoming films include My Idiot Brother (with Paul Rudd, Zooey Deschanel, and Elizabeth Banks) and the ultimate guilty pleasure of the year Piranha 3-D.

The best straight man on TV, and on one of the best shows on TV. His deadpan delivery is pitch-perfect, as are the variety of eyebrow raises in his arsenal. The show will likely be overlooked entirely, which is a shame.  With the show unjustly cancelled, Scott is joining Parks and Recreation, where hopefully he can find better luck awards-wise.

Our first ever year end list! Hooray! We made it all the way to the end of our first year (I am saying this even though we only started a matter of months ago!) of blogging and radioing. Yes. True. Statements of congratulation all around, for us.

Anyways, as we are new at this and still extremely incompetent in all fields (creativity, writing ability, creative writing ability) we are going to keep it simple. Below we will list each of our favorite three albums, our favorite television show, and our favorite lady all from the last year with no explanation at all. This is probably for the best anyways, as no one really reads the reasonings so why spend time writing them? All the readers are all like, “The Pitchforked gave this band a 9.2, alright they good.” That is what they are definitely like.

The Situation:

The grizzly bear and Don Draper are dropped into an open grassy field with no other objects (trees, humans, other animals) for three million miles (so many miles!).

Don Draper is donned (get it?! you get it) only with his best suit, a Lucky Strike cigarette, a cigarette lighter, and a glass of Scotch with ice.

The grizzly bear is given nothing. As it is a grizzly bear and doesn’t even have thumbs. (Good thing this isn’t a thumb war as that would be quite one sided!)

The Pros and Cons of the Opponents in This Here Battle:

Don Draper Pros-

• Equipped with his alcohol and cigarette lighter, he could set the grizzly bear’s fur on fire. This would be detrimental to the grizzly bear
• If the grizzly bear is female, he could seduce the bear into bed, sleep with her, and then offer her five thousand dollars to leave forever.
• His body is made for fighting. Have you seen his body!?
• He probably wouldn’t even care if he lost as he is living someone else’s life. Don would be all like, sitting in his car waiting for the train to come speeding past, debating whether he should quit this life he has created and the grizzly bear would be all like, “ROAR!”

Grizzly Bear Pros-

• Grizzly bears are fairly strong.
• Teeth.

Don Draper Cons-

• He is a human. (Although that is debateable).
• Weak lungs due to years of smoking unfiltered Lucky Strikes.
• He’s getting old. I know, this is not a having sex with Betty competition (although it should be! I bet the grizzly bear would do an adequate job!), but still it must be mentioned that Don can’t even successfully do that always. He the man, but only sometimes.
• There is a possibility that when he defeated the grizzly bear, he might take the bear’s identity and claim that Don Draper was dead. Therefore technically the bear would win, even though Don Draper was really the bear. Then Don would be sitting on a train, reading a Volkswagen advertisement and a man would ask him if he was Don Draper. Don would just look at him with a look of disgust and then eat the man, because he is living the life of a grizzly bear now.

Grizzly Bear Cons-

• No thumbs.

In Don Draper’s world does anyone really ever win? Don has a successful career in the advertising world but lives in pertetual existential angst. Betty has it “all,” a family, a rich husband, and a horse, and yet is quite unhappy. So does anyone really ever win?
