The MTV VMA’s are known more for outrageous celeb behavior than the actual nominees. Which is kind of okay, because, let’s face it, the nominees usually suck. Head-scratchers this year include 5 nominations for the generally panned Beyonce/Lady Gaga collab “Video Phone” (it somehow managed a nod in Best Female Video over “Telephone”), a nomination for 30 Seconds to Mars (they still exist?) in Video of the Year, and a disturbing lack of Janelle Monae (she only scored 1 nomination for Best Choreography). With that being said, there were some nice surprises hidden amongst the list of nominees. Gaga dominated with a record-setting number (13), but hipster-approved acts like Florence + The Machine (4 nominations, including Video of the Year for “Dog Days Are Over”), MGMT (2 nominations including Rock Video for “Flash Delirium”), and Broken Bells (for Best New Artist) also did well. Miike Snow, Mumford and Sons, and The Black Keys were nominated in some of the lesser categories, too. The VMA’s will be broadcast on MTV on Sunday, September 12 at 9pm ET. June 11, 2010
Check out the best parts from Tila Tequila’s rant on the Monarchy of Satan and how the Government, Lady GaGa, and “the others” are trying to destroy you. June 8, 2010
It’s here! It’s here! It’s here! To recap:
Sounds like a standard, run-of-the-mill pop video to me. Seems like something Ke$ha could have done (it does not). Thoughts? Is it better than “Telephone”? June 1, 2010
My coverage of Janelle Monáe has been criminally low, despite my love for her and the fact that her debut album was finally released a few weeks ago. I will attempt to rectify this glaring oversight by diving into her critically-acclaimed record The ArchAndroid, a piece of genre-bending music that has been called everything from “as bold as mainstream music gets” (Pitchfork), “a near-perfect R&B album” (Paste), and a “star-making debut” (LA Times). And it truly is a towering accomplishment, the rare musical masterpiece that actually deserves such a lofty title. If people are still listening to music in 20 years, I would place a bet that this will still be on heavy rotation. April 19, 2010
Yes, that was a poor excuse for a pun. But you will immediately forgive me based on what I will now present to you: the Phillies Mascot performing “Bad Romance” in full VMA-Gaga attire. If only all baseball games were like this, rather than 20 innings of mind-numbing boredom… I love how uninterested the baseball players are. That mascot was putting in 110%, and for such little acknowledgment… Almost makes you wonder about the player-mascot relationship… April 15, 2010
So I did not do a links post tonight, but I have an excuse I promise! I won’t go outright and say it, but perhaps the picture after the break will be a good enough hint… March 28, 2010
