Amazon is selling Contra a day early and for only $3.99. If you are not a thief and therefore do not steal your music, that is fairly good deal! Remember, Rostam Batmanglij is the best, so we should support. Update: You can also stream the B-side “Giant” here. The opening definitely sounds like a default ringtone. Glad it didn’t make it to the album in this version as this song used to be amazing when they played it live.              January 6, 2010
As we have said before, we are very aware this is starting to look a lot like VampireOctopus.com. We’ll lay we promise! Anyways, Contra is out next week, but here’s a full stream for you while your waiting and here’s our review of the album. Although I must admit, the album has grown on me considerably since that was written. January 5, 2010
So I’ve been listening to the highly anticipated, both by myself and the army of blogs and what not, sophomore effort by Vampire Weekend, Contra, and I am getting pretty upset! This album, for the most part, sounds like a soulless default ringtone! And default ringtones are lame! Every single song, except for “Cousins” which is actually great, seems to have a fairly good base, but is completely ruined on the production side. Songs such as “Diplomat’s Son” sound like they were made in FruityLoops or Garageband by the kid you thought was so musically inspired in middle school but then later realized anyone can make random bass and drum noises sound “meh.” Continue reading… October 20, 2009
So Beach House, who I recently saw perform at the NorVa, and in my opinion are the most underrated band on the planet right now (on the whole planet, I assure you!), just announced they are planning to release a follow-up to Devotion which they will call Teen Dream. The record is planned to be released on January 26, 201o and will feature, obviously, some of the amazing songs they have been performing on their recent tour with Grizzly Bear. The “problem” with Beach House songs has always been their lack of ability to go anywhere great past their beautiful “first gear” melodies. Their new songs, however, seemed to explode right off the stage when I saw them live, going into “second gear” and even “third gear” sometimes (so many stick shift references for someone who knows little of cars and clearly nothing of how to write metaphors past an elementary level). So I am excited! Best album of the year, maybe. January will certainly be a huge month with Vampire Weekend’s Contra coming out on January 12th. Exciting indeed.
