Deerhunter – Halcyon Digest (out September 28)

We’ve already heard a few songs off of the Brandon Cox-lead band’s (like the stellar “Revival”) fourth studio album, which have made us really excited to hear the full thing.  Though the album won’t likely depart much from the group’s established aesthetic of muscular guitar work coupled with airy vocals, we should still get a few surprises. The second song released could give us a good idea of what to expect; “Primitive 3D” starts off as a charging indie rock song, before giving way to a minute-long instrumental piano closing that’s punctuated by strange ambient noises and what sounds like a baby’s mobile.

Antony and the Johnsons – Swanlights (out October 12)

Lead singer Antony Hegarty has one of the most distinctive and unique voices in music, let alone the indie hipster domain.  This, of course, makes any new release by the group of interest and Swanlights is no exception.  Their lead single, “Thank You For Your Love” furthers the band’s reputation as one that can tackle romanticism without ever delving into pop cheese (which speaks to Hegarty’s abilities as a vocalist, as well as the band’s baroque/cabaret sensibilities).  The song is more upbeat than, say, “Hope There’s Someone”, with triumphal trumpets piercing the chorus and, if it weren’t for the vocals, it might sound like an old Hall & Oates record.

Belle and Sebastian – Write About Love (out October 12)

We’ve already written about the Scottish twee icon’s upcoming album (it’ll be their eighth), though we got the album art wrong.  The above image, which is very much in line with their past covers like The Boy With the Arab Strap and If You’re Feeling Sinister, is the actual album art.  Either way any new B&S album is cause of excitement, especially since it’s been a good four years since the band’s last effort (though us fans at least had the live album and Stuart Murdoch’s side project, God Help the Girl, to tide us over).

Kid Cudi – Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager (out October 26)

In the past few years, perhaps no rapper haas done as much to bridge the gap between the worlds of rap and indie rock as Mr. Cudi. Whether it’s featuring Ratatat and MGMT on his debut album, Man on the Moon, collaborating with Rostam Batmanglij and Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino for the Converse track “All Summer”, or remixing Vampire Weekend’s “Ottoman”, Cudi has established himself as the hipster rapper of choice.  The album’s lead single, “Erase Me”, features Kanye West and seems to accomplish the rap-rock sound that Lil Wayne failed to achieve.  If it’s a good idea of how the rest of the album is going to sound, it looks like Cudi will even further blur the lines between hip-hop and rock.

Kanye West – Dark Twisted Fantasy (out November 16)

Formerly titled Good Ass Job, Mr. West’s first post-VMA breakdown album is one of the most highly-anticipated records of the year.  Lead single “Power”, though it failed to catch on with mainstream radio, is one of, if not THE best rap song of the year, and it’s accompanying music video (ahem, “moving painting” as Kanye likes to say) points to the kind of high art ambition rarely seen in music today.  Should the rest of the album live up to the first single, Dark Twisted Fantasy could very well be West’s magnum opus and the album of the year.
