The next single from Vampire Weekend‘s Contrawill be Giving Up The Gun. The single has a truly inspired video to go with it, featuring a plethora of household names, such as Jake Gyllenhaal and Joe Jonas, in a game of tennis. The combination of stars seems a little strange, but makes for very entertaining viewing as you see each and every one of them cleaned up by a very energetic redhead.
The song itself is definitely suited to its partnering video, due to its use of slamming percussion sections, occasional smattering of glockenspiel and brilliant lyrical input. The song is one of the standout tracks from Contra, and definitely deserves to have such a brilliant, if strange, video.
Yeasayer are fast becoming one of the biggest cult bands to come out of North America. Aesthetic Octopus got together with vocalist Chris Keating, a live bandmate whose name was lost in the hustle and bustle of the busy Glaswegian bar, and, eventually, Ira Wolf Tuton, bassist and oil-wrestling enthusiast. We discussed their new album, Odd Blood, press negativity and the cover culture of today’s music. In addition to this, my personal penchant for Joanna Newsom, and anticipation for Have One On Me was slammed by Tuton during the interview. Don’t worry, insults are what he gives to his friends…
After forming officially in December 2007, Mumford and Sons have taken audiences everywhere by storm. Their heart-clenching melodies and passionate live performances have set them in good stead for years to come, and personally, they really do deserve everything they’re getting at the moment.
The boys recently toured in India with, partner in crime, Laura Marling, and recorded an excellent video for future single, “The Cave” while they were at it. Continue reading…
Joanna Newsom is, let’s face it, an other-worldly being with extraordinary story-telling powers and, it transpires, a face for high fashion campaigns.
She recently played at the little known Sydney Opera House on her 28th birthday to a captivated audience. The set included phenomenal new material and older, but still wondrous, material that has featured on past studio albums of Newsom’s.
Newsom kicked the set off with a spell-binding newbie entitled, “Love You Again”. Despite its restrained nature, the song tells of defiance to love someone all over again after a mistake. There is a paradoxical atmosphere within the quietened melodies that feature throughout the song, that are typical of Newsom, and the emboldened temperament of Newsom’s singing voice. Were it not for the rebellious character of Newsom’s vocals, this could be a slow and dormant track, but the lyrical strength and quiet power behind Newsom’s voice really make this song what it is. The realse date of Laura Marling‘s second album, I Speak Because I Can is getting nearer by the the second. Unsurprisngly, I am on tenterhooks. Sure, Marling has played many of the songs from the album live already, but she has already proved that there is a noticeable difference between this and her studio work.
The video for Devil’s Spoke, the first single of the album, was recently released onto the internet and shows striking images of landscapes and fire that partner with the song perfectly.
Devil’s Spoke is a far cry from Marling’s earlier album, Alas, I Cannot Swim. The song’s bold as brass atmosphere lends itself to the thundering acculmination of guitars, drums and, most importantly, Marling’s determined and gritty vocals. The lines “Eye to Eye, Nose to Nose/Ripping off each other’s clothes in a most peculiar way” are amongst the most spine-tingling of the song. This is most certainly the beginning of Laura Marling proving to any naysayers that she is no one trick pony.

This picture depicts the famous Champion using the skills he learned from his lady master, to give Keyboard Cat his very own, relaxing cat massage. All of those hours at the keyboard, playing off the fails of the internet, has made Keyboard Cat’s back muscles very tense over the last year. Glad to see Champion knew exactly how to help!
